Is it possible to have a scarless hair transplant?

Is it possible to have a scarless hair transplant? Unfortunately, a true “scarless hair transplant” does not exist yet. Scar formation is a natural response to any damage done to body tissue. If a hair transplant surgeon claims to have a scarless hair transplant procedure, they are most likely referring to the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method.

Today, there are two primary methods of hair transplant surgery: FUT (follicular unit transplant) and FUE (follicular unit extraction). With the FUT method, a narrow strip of tissue is removed from the donor area (usually the back or sides of the head). Then the follicular units are dissected from the tissue. The scalp will heal in a line that is typically undetectable for those that wear their hair longer.

In the FUE method, individual follicles are removed one at a time by drilling small holes into the scalp. The term “scarless” is misleading because the punches made to extract the follicles still produce tiny scars scattered throughout the donor area instead of having one linear scar. However, the scars tend to be less noticeable even when the hair is worn short.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Ballon will go over your options and together you will decide what is the best treatment. Dr. Ballon is the only hair transplant surgeon in Georgia certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.
