Although baldness is normally associated with men, women can also be afflicted by hair loss. It can be particularly devastating and embarrassing for women who are expected to conform to certain beauty standards including a full head of hair. As many as 21 million women are affected by hair loss in the United States. There are several conditions that can cause hair loss in women and many of them can be treated. However, it is a good idea to consult a physician to rule out any underlying serious conditions before seeking treatment. Here are some of the most common causes of hair loss in women:
Andogenetic Alopecia
Andogenetic Alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is caused by the action of androgens or male hormones. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a derivative of the male hormone testosterone. Scientists believe that DHT shrinks hair follicles, making it impossible for them to survive. When female hormones are lowered, androgens such as DHT can increase. This imbalance can cause problems such as hair loss. It can be tied to a variety of factors including ovarian cysts, high androgen index birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause. Most women experience diffuse thinning of the hair on all areas of the scalp. Heredity is also a big contributing factor in male and female pattern baldness.
Telogen Effluvium
Stressful events such as child birth, malnutrition, severe infections, major surgery, or extreme stress can cause approximately 90% of the hair to shift all at once into the shedding phase. Telogen effluvium can begin between 6 weeks to three months after the stressful event. For most people with TE, complete remission can be achieved as long as severe stress is avoided. However, some women experience this phenomena persistently for months or years without a known cause.
Anagen Effluvium
Anagen effluvium occurs when the mitotic or metabolic activity of the hair follicle is impaired. This is most commonly caused by chemotherapy. Since chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cancer cells, other cells that divide quickly such as hair follicles in the growing phase are also affected.
Traction alopecia
Traction alopecia is caused by repetitive trauma to the hair follicles from hairstyles that pull the hair over time. These hairstyles can include braiding, cornrows, tight ponytails, and extensions. This type of hair loss is usually permanent but can be treated with a hair transplant.
